XP

Saved XP across sessions and restarts, and who hands XP out.

Coming in the next Admin Tools update. It's being tested now; this page describes how it works.

In scenarios that use XP, like Conflict, the admin tools can keep every player's XP between sessions, restarts and even a fresh world, and decide who hands XP out: the game mode, staff, or both.

Why

On its own, the game keeps XP for one session. Conflict gives it back if you reconnect before the server restarts, and a world save holds it only if the server loads that save. A restart without saving, a wipe or a new scenario puts everyone back to Private.

With saving on, the server remembers each player's XP by who they are (their Bohemia GUID) and gives it back a couple of seconds after they join. Their rank follows, because ranks come from XP.

It's kept by GUID, never by name, so a player can rename as often as they like. The file also notes their last name and Steam ID so it's easy to read. Someone who joins without a GUID (the Bohemia backend having a moment) plays normally, their XP just isn't saved or given back that session. On a local test server nobody has a GUID, so it's matched by name there, but only with matchNamesWhenNoIds on in admins.json.

Who hands out XP

On the XP tab, with Change the XP settings (edit_xp):

  • The game mode: the usual kills, captures, supplies and tasks. Switch it off and only staff give XP, for a clan setup where ranks are handed out.
  • Staff: Give or Take XP on Online Players, Operator, the XP tab and the dashboard's Player Manager.
  • New players get the scenario's starting rank: Conflict can start people above Private. Off, everyone new starts at Private.

Set Rank, Promote and Demote always work, whatever these say.

Saving

  • Save everyone's XP between sessions and restarts: on to start with.
  • Saved XP replaces what a world save or Conflict's own reconnect puts back: on to start with, so the saved number is the one that counts. Switch it off if you'd rather the game's own number win when it has one.
  • Forget Everyone's Saved XP: wipes every saved number, for a fresh start. It asks twice. Whoever is online keeps what they have, and it's saved again from there.

It's saved every 30 seconds and whenever someone leaves.

Giving and taking XP

Give or Take XP... shows the player's current XP and rank, then asks how much. A minus in front takes it away, like -500. It never goes below 0. The player is told who gave or took it, and it goes in the admin log (actions) and to Discord as an admin action.

It's on:

  • Online Players, under Faction and Rank, for whoever you've picked,
  • Operator, for yourself (it can have a hotkey too),
  • the XP tab, next to everyone online with their rank and XP,
  • the dashboard's Player Manager, which also shows their XP.

It needs Give or take XP (give_xp), admins and up to start with. The usual rank rule applies: not on someone ranked the same as you or higher, unless you're an owner.

Scenarios without XP

Game Master and many custom scenarios don't use XP, and there's nothing to save. The XP tab says so, and Give or Take XP answers that the scenario doesn't use XP. Set Rank still works there, on the character.

Files

XP/settings.json holds the settings and XP/players.json everyone's saved XP. See Config files.
