Names
Display names, prefixes and ranks on nametags, chat and the player list.
Coming in the next Admin Tools update. It's being tested now; this page describes how it works.
Give players a display name, a prefix (a clan or unit tag) and their rank, shown in the format you pick: [Prefix] Name, [Rank] Name, [Prefix] [Rank] Name or just Name. Staff can set anyone's, and you choose whether players may set their own.
What it looks like
How the same few players read in chat with each setting. The coloured lines are what players see where the game can show tag colours.
The staff line has no colour because staff rank prefixes use the game's normal colour; only a tag someone has been given can be coloured. Nametags and the player list show the same text.
Where it shows
Everywhere the game draws a player's name for other players: nametags, chat, the player list, the voice indicator and the group menu.
Tag colours only show where the game draws the name as rich text. Your game's own log (console.log) says which places those are the first time a coloured tag appears ([HSM] names: the chat can show tag colours). Everywhere else the tag is in the normal colour.
The real name never goes away where it matters. Bans, the admin log, Discord notifications, player records and every admin tools tab use the real name, so staff always know who someone actually is. The Names tab shows both.
The Names tab
It needs Set or clear anyone's display name and prefix (manage_names) to use, or Change the name settings (edit_names) for the settings. Both are admins and up to start with.
Everyone online is listed with their real name and, after the arrow, what everyone sees, with Display Name... and Prefix... for each. Leave the popup blank to clear it. The player gets a message saying who changed it.
The same two buttons are on Online Players (Name section) and, for yourself, on Operator, where they can have hotkeys.
Settings
- Custom names on: off, everyone shows their real name. Saved names are kept for when it's back on.
- How a name looks:
Name,[Prefix] Name(to start with),[Rank] Nameor[Prefix] [Rank] Name. The rank comes from the scenario: Conflict's XP ranks, or the rank on the character elsewhere. - Short rank:
Sgtrather thanSergeant. - Staff show their staff rank as a prefix (
[Admin]) when they have no prefix of their own. - Players set their own display name:
/name New Namein chat,/nameon its own clears it. - Players set their own prefix:
/tag ABC,/tagon its own clears it. - Tags can have a colour: on to start with. Staff add a colour after the tag in the Prefix popup:
ABC #ff8800,ABC #f80or a colour name (red, orange, yellow, gold, green, cyan, blue, purple, pink, white, grey). A colour on its own recolours the tag someone already has. Off, every tag shows in the game's normal colour, and the colours are kept for when it's back on. - Players colour their own tag: off to start with. On,
/tag ABC #ff8800works for players too. - Only from this rank up: limit those two to players of a military rank or higher.
- Longest name or prefix: 24 characters to start with, 3 to 32.
- Words players can't use: admin, owner, moderator and the like to start with, so nobody passes themselves off as staff. Staff can use them. Players also can't take the real name of someone who's online.
A saved change shows on everyone within a second.
Discord sync
With our bot, Reforgedmin HQ, in your Discord:
- a linked player's in-game name becomes their Discord nickname there, and follows it when it changes,
- your Discord roles give in-game tags:
@Veterancan give[VET],@Staffcan give[STAFF], each with a colour if you like. A tag staff set in game always wins over one from Discord.
Setting it up (server owner):
- On reforgedmin.com, open your server and the Discord tab. Press Invite Reforgedmin HQ and pick your Discord. You need Manage Server there.
- In Discord, Server Settings > Roles, drag Reforgedmin HQ above the roles of the members it should rename. Discord only lets a bot rename people below it, and never the server owner. The dashboard tells you how many roles sit above it.
- On the Discord tab, type a tag next to each role that should give one, and choose whether names, tags or both sync.
- In game, Names tab settings: switch on Discord sync. Until you do, no names leave your server.
Linking (each player, once): type /link in game. You get a code like RFM-7K3Q for 10 minutes. In your community's Discord, type /link RFM-7K3Q. That works on every platform, Xbox and PlayStation included. /unlink in Discord undoes it.
The Names tab shows the sync status: not set up, tied to your Discord and how many linked players are online, or what's wrong (the bot was removed, it's missing Manage Nicknames...).
Only linked players' display names go to Discord. Their GUIDs stay between the game server and reforgedmin.com, and nothing else about your server goes anywhere.
Kept by GUID
Names and prefixes are kept by the player's Bohemia GUID, like saved XP, so they follow the account through renames and restarts. A player without a GUID can't be given one until the Bohemia backend knows them.
Other name mods
If you also run a mod that changes player names (BFS Custom Player Names, for example), the two decide the same thing. Use one or the other.
Files
Names/settings.json holds the settings and Names/players.json everyone's saved names and prefixes. See Config files.
